Safe materials handling for chemical and other hazardous environments

The J D Neuhaus company have a long established reputation for the supply of safe, reliable, low-maintenance handling equipment for chemical and other industries subject to hazardous environments. The major safety factor of the JDN products, including cranes, hoists and winches, is their equipment is operated by compressed air (or optionally hydraulics), rather than utilising electric power. This ensures a high degree of explosion-proofness when handling hazardous chemicals or when working in otherwise dangerous environments or atmospheres. Lifting equipment is 100% duty cycle rated, thus eliminating downtime, and can be remotely controlled using pendant cable controllers, or wireless hand-held radio operated units.

(Right): Typical J D Neuhaus Mini hoist, rated for use in explosive atmospheres or hazardous environments.

Equipment safety ratings for use in potentially explosive conditions are Ex II 2 GD IIA T4(X) / II 3 GD IIB T4(X). Increased spark protection, involving a galvanised copper plated finish for the hoist bottom block and load hook assembly, can be supplied to achieve an Ex II 2 GD IIB T4(X) rating. Increased sparking protection for operation in explosions group IIC, covers the supply of bronze running wheels, travelling gears and the hand gear mechanisms of trolleys for a rating of Ex II 2 GD IIC T4(X).

The JDN general duty mini series air hoists, with lift capacities from 125 to 1000kg, are rated Ex  II 3 GD IIA T4(X). All units, including the larger capacity JDN handling products with lift capacities up to 115 tonnes, are suitable for lube-free operation with easy maintenance. They feature sensitive, infinitely variable speed control for precise load positioning, with overload protection as standard. They are also insensitive to dust, humidity, fumes and other generally poor working conditions and can operate in a temperature range of -20°C to 70°C.

The products provide general lifting or load transfer operations within the chemical and a wide range of general industries. Submersible pumps, motors, pipework and containerised raw finished goods can all be safety and efficiently accommodated for plant operation, repair or maintenance including tank cleaning functions. Special purpose hoists for big bag handling or twin parallel hoist units with synchronised lifting can also be supplied, together with low-headroom hoists where limited space is available.

The JDN hydraulically operated crane systems include single or double girder overhead travelling cranes, underslung cranes with low headroom trolley designs and slewing jib cranes. The products can also feature rack and pinion drives for safe power transmission in offshore or other vessel mounted operations if required.

Hydraulically operated hoists and monorail hoists for safe
operation within hazardous and explosion endangered areas

J D Neuhaus manufacture a range of Ex rated handling equipment including hydraulically operated hoists and monorail hoists for safe operation within hazardous and explosion endangered areas. This equipment is the viable economic option where compressed air supplies may not be available, but where hydraulic lines, central hydraulic systems or hydraulic powers supplies currently exist.

With swl capacities up to 100 tonnes, these products operate at intake pressures from 100 to 180 bar (dependent upon motor size), with oil or HFC flame resistant pressure fluids. All units feature encapsulated, robust gear motors with extremely low noise emissions. Integrated overload protection is provided as standard and sensitive, infinitely variable speed control is achieved for all load lift, lower and rail transfer operations. Only two supply connections are made to the hoist, with any oil leakage being drained internally. Hoists up to 20 tonnes carrying capacity also incorporate controlled load-lowering in the event of oil supply failure.

All hoists provide a three metre lift height as standard and are equipped with two metre pendant controllers. The monorail hoists can be supplied in five load ratings from 20 to 100 tonnes, with standard hoists available in eight ratings covering loads from three to 100 tonnes. Special paint finishes, including yellow to identify offshore duties, can also be specified, together with increased spark protection for higher Ex rated operation.

Hydraulic crane systems
adapted to user requirements

Where a hydraulic power system supply is available on site, then hydraulic cranes from J D Neuhaus can be a more practical option for all lifting and handling operations than their well established compressed air operated products.

The range of cranes that can be supplied include both single and double girder overhead travelling cranes together with slewing jib cranes and underslung cranes incorporating special low-headroom trolley designs. Cranes with parallel hoists and synchronised lifting hoist arrangements can also be supplied, with individual hoist capacities up to 100 tonnes.

J D Neuhaus specialise in the provision of crane systems adapted to suit individual requirements. This can include remote radio control of the crane lift and traverse operations, covering comprehensive application requirements and even simultaneous operation of multiple hoists. For lifting operations on offshore rigs or sea going vessels, crane systems can be fitted with rack and pinion drive systems to ensure safe operation during bad-weather conditions. Control boxes with receiver can also be customised to suit specific electro-hydraulic interface requirements, together with all necessary system tubing in stainless steel where required.

All equipment is designed and rated for use in explosion-endangered areas. The standard rating is EX II 2 GD IIA/II 3 GD IIB T4 (X), with higher classifications also available on request. Super-silent operation is combined with sensitive, infinite controls including controlled load-lowering in the event of supply oil failure, together with an integrated overload switch-off function. Oil or HFC pressure fluids can be used at intake pressures of 100 to 180 bar. Only two supply connections are required per hoist with leakage oil drained internally for maximum safety.

New emergency device for safe load
lowering in the event of mains power loss

As part of an ongoing safety evaluation for all their products, J D Neuhaus have introduced an emergency lowering device for their EH range of air operated monorail hoists. With this feature JDN complies with the leading standards like NORSOK, specifying an emergency device for the safe lowering of loads in the event of a cut in the main power supply. This new device supplements an existing fail-safe disc brake, which is activated in the immediate event of a mains power failure, ensuring that suspended loads are held safely and securely at their above-floor level until mains power is again made available.

JDN monorail hoists with lift capacities from 25 to 60 tonnes can now be equipped with the latest safety development. This comprises an additional separate pressurised air reservoir tank (maintained at a mains air pressure of normally 6 bar), with a purpose built hand controller incorporating two additional pushbuttons. The controller provides positive two-handed lowering control, while eliminating the potential for unintended load movement. One button switches between normal and emergency lowering operations. The second button activates the integrated safety brake enabling the safe controlled lowering of a deadweight load. The air reservoir, which is protected by a check valve, is topped-up during normal hoist operations, and contains a sufficient air supply to complete a controlled lowering of a suspended load in the event of a loss of mains air pressure. Det Norske Veriras certification of the emergency device can be supplied where required.

The NORSOK standard covers offshore cranes as well as power driven winches and hoists. JDN can supply handling equipment that has been purposed designed for BOP handling. Other essential machinery and even emergency escape products can also be safely and effectively handled, with the additional features of controlled load lowering even in the event of a total power failure.

These JDN products are designed for working in hazardous areas and are supplied with Ex ratings for explosion risks. They are insensitive to humidity and dust while operating at temperatures from -20°C to +70°C. Instant starting, minimum maintenance and low air consumption are their positive features, coupled with compact low-headroom design. Standard features include lateral guide plates, emergency shut-off valve together with both anti-climb and anti-drop devices. Optional accessories include increased spark protection (and higher Ex rating), rack and pinion drive, overload protection, two speed trolley travel control and filter silencers.
