Custodial Class 1 cell locks, Pass Locks and High Security Multipoint Locks (MPL) offer design quality and manufacturing strength.

Leading lock manufacture Pickersgill-Kaye Ltd showcased its portfolio of high security and custodial locking products at the Home Office's 2012 Security & Policing Exhibition in Farnborough, in January.

Pickersgill-Kaye offer design quality and manufacturing strength within its renowned range of Custodial Class 1 cell locks, Pass Locks and High Security Multipoint Locks (MPL). The company also offer a range of high security slide bar and claw gate locks for perimeter security applications and the industry standard Kaye-Rota padlock.

The Class 1 Cell Lock is made from a single billet of high quality solid steel and fits all standard cell doors. Tested against 300,000 door and handle operation cycles, the cell door locks are considered to be the best on the market.

The Pickersgill-Kaye's Class 2 Pass Lock and Auto slam Pass Lock has a heavy duty, double sided key operation, with unique functionality coupled with a robust reliability ideal for high security applications, while the MPL includes emergency and panic exit devices, and specialised function locks with modular lock cases to suit either panic bar, paddle handle or lever operation.

The Push Pad claw locks and Slide bar gate locks for perimeter security applications are also fitted in solid casing suitable for a variety of gate standards and have ingress protection against dust, moisture and insects to increase defence against corrosion and provide a life-long reliability.

Its cell locks undergo extensive and challenging testing on key operation, lock construction and overall durability and resistance to attack in order to satisfy the operational requirements of the national and international custodial market sectors.

The innovative manufacture has recently secured its first order from the Middle East to supply the 8 lever lock for cells in a prison extension, while closer to home Pickersgill-Kaye has just completed the installation of cell locks in doors manufactured for a major Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme for new Police Investigation Centres.

Pickersgill-Kaye's Business Development Manager for Security and Engineering products, John Moore is looking forward to the Security & Policing Exhibition 2012 (organised by the Home Office Centre of Applied Science and Technology which has expanded its remit to include National Defence issues as well as police matters).
He commented: "We are delighted that once again our locks will be taking centre stage at this important security exhibition. The comprehensive range of products we have on show will attract many visitors at the event to our stand.

"Our custodial and high security locks are already in use to protect national critical infrastructure assets sites and police cells across the country, while due to our continuing export drive we are successfully selling globally to regions such as South East Asia, the Middle East and other EU countries including Ireland."

Pickersgill-Kaye's lock-in-a-box package simplifies
customer ordering and helps to streamline production

Pickersgill-Kaye's lock-in-a-box package will simplify customer ordering and streamline production.

Pickersgill-Kaye's lock-in-a-box package will simplify customer ordering and streamline production.

This latest innovation from the Leeds based company will enable its customers, after they have answered a few simple questions such as whether the door opens inwards or outwards and hinging arrangements, to receive everything needed for lock installation in a single package.

Previously, customers were required to manually select each item needed, a time consuming process which after listing door plates, lock cylinders, guards and handles could run into several order lines, with the added risk that one or more of the items could be wrong.

The introduction of lock-in-a-box also has major benefits for Pickersgill-Kaye because not only will it remove some of the complexities involved in supplying the products but it will also enable the company to have better production pre-planning, which should further improve delivery times.

However, the biggest winners are door manufacturers as it will simplify their Pickersgill-Kaye stockholding and also improve logistics.

Initially, lock-in-a-box orders will be processed by Pickersgill-Kaye manually, and customers will be asked the various questions in a text format. However, the company is currently working on a software solution which will enable customers to configure the product for themselves, next year.

Pickersgill-Kaye's managing director Peter Murphy explains: "We decided to go down this particular route because of the complexity of the Multipoint range and to avoid customers having to look around for different items such as striking plates.

"As part of the process Pickersgill-Kaye is also developing a piece of software which will ask customers a few simple questions and then match their specifications with Pickersgill-Kaye's production needs.  That will then save time down the supply line, and ensure that the right product is supplied pre-packed for a specific door."

Pickersgill-Kaye believes that lock-in-a-box will enable customers to reduce their contingency stockholding, leading to further customer satisfaction, thanks to pre-order configuration.

This latest development by Pickersgill-Kaye follows hard-on-the-heels of the recent BS EN 1125:2008 and BS EN 179:2008 ratings for its emergency escape locks included in the high Security Multipoint range.

The company manufactures an extensive range of surface mounted and mortice version locks. These include emergency and panic exit devices, and specialised function locks with modular lock cases to suit either panic bar, paddle handle or lever operation. All of Pickersgill-Kaye's multi and single point locks are built to the highest technical standards and aesthetically designed to complement the modern workplace.

Pickersgill-Kaye export orders help UK economy

Pickersgill-Kaye Ltd, which designs and manufactures locks and safety products for the security, custodial and rail industries, has won contracts with major customers worldwide.

A Leeds based manufacturer has fought back against the economic downturn and secured ongoing overseas business, which has enabled it to attain a significant export turnover of over three quarters of a million pounds, for 2011.

Pickersgill-Kaye Ltd, which designs and manufactures locks and safety products for the security, custodial and rail industries, has won contracts with major customers worldwide.

Employing 55 people, the specialist engineering company has developed a growing reputation for well-designed and quality manufactured security products which are backed up by excellent levels of service, and this has helped in its bid to win new business against often stiff international competition.

In Asia, Pickersgill-Kaye supplied Meggitts' plant in China with specialist hose connector equipment, while Korean companies Jiwon Tech and Rotem took delivery of train LED door status indicators and cab door locks, for passenger rolling stock destined for Irish Rail, respectively. Ocean Eagle Holdings Ltd in Hong Kong and Hitachi in Japan have also previously specified various Pickersgill-Kaye products.

Following the successful launch of its range of custodial locks for prisons, police stations and other detention facilities in the UK, the company has had interest from around the world - securing further orders from Ireland, as well as winning a first contract for its custodial lock products from the Middle East, where Pickersgill-Kaye's locks will be used in a new prison extension. It has also made inroads in France, with a further order from Locken for more Kaye-Rota padlocks.

Meanwhile in North America, Pickersgill-Kaye products continue to be used on a number of new build applications with Axion Technologies (emergency talkback units for Toronto Transit tram cars), Julien (hammer boxes for tram application) and Supersteel (loco cab door locks for EMD locos).

Pickersgill-Kaye is a prominent manufacturer of equipment to the European rail network and supplies a cross-section of blue chip companies like Bombardier, Siemens, Swiss Railways, Polmor, IFE, Jukova, SAPA and EVAC, including loco locks, emergency door release access panels, cab door locks and hammer boxes, for transport systems in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, Austria and Ireland.

Another product which has helped the Leeds' company to boost its profile has been the introduction of a range of high security gate locks for perimeter fencing. Applications include chemical plants, power plants, gas terminals, oil refineries; utility company perimeters, military bases and other large areas which need to restrict and control access.

Pickersgill-Kaye's sales manager Harry Griffiths said: "The business is again very pleased with the amount of export orders it has achieved, especially given the difficult domestic trading background. The latest contracts have further increased our export profile and helped to provide valuable work for our highly experienced and committed workforce.

"During 2012 the company will continue to innovate and introduce new products which we hope will help us to new export and domestic orders from the rail and security sectors."
